It starts with the repeated work your team already does every week: enquiries, follow-ups, order updates, support tickets. I find the few jobs where AI or automation clearly pays for itself, design the system, build it, and hand it over with documentation so your team can run it. You get working systems, not a strategy deck.

Most small businesses get the quickest return from three places: answering and routing calls or messages (AI receptionists and voice agents), following up on every lead without someone chasing it, and clearing admin such as data entry, reporting and ticket triage. The right starting point depends on where your team loses the most hours each week.

The first 30-minute call is free. My published starting prices are £850 for a half-day audit of one automation or AI feature, from £1,800 for an architecture sprint, and from £8,500 for a fixed-scope production build. Prices are agreed before any build starts, and I do not bill by the hour.

It is a short, structured review of your workflows, data and team that ends in a ranked list of where AI would help, what each item would cost, and what to do first. My version is the two-day AI Readiness Audit, built for owners who know AI is relevant but not yet where it fits.

A freelancer is often enough for a single workflow. When the system has to keep running unattended, with monitoring, fixes and changes over months, an AI automation agency is usually the safer choice. Erudience, the agency I run, stays small so every client still works directly with me.

If you only need calls answered, messages taken and simple questions handled, an off-the-shelf AI receptionist is usually enough and cheaper. A custom voice agent makes sense when calls have to check stock, take payments, book into your own systems or follow compliance rules.
